A Queer Guide to Bali Gay Bars and Hotels

Bali has made quite a reputation for Pink Tourism over the years. In this article, I’ll give you a detailed overview of the best Bali gay bars and hotels.

Indonesia doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to gay rights. Of course, they do have liberal-leaning cities like Jakarta in which being gay is cool in certain pockets. (I say this largely through anecdotal evidence based on people I’ve spoken to.) But then again, there are also parts of Indonesia that enforce Sharia Law — Aceh Province being the prime example.

Amidst all that, Bali is a little paradise bubble supported by tourism. Pink tourism plays a large part of that, although anti-gay laws in the rest of Indonesia might threaten that. But for now, all the queer boys and girls from all over Indonesia flock to Bali the first chance they get.

Of all the places I’ve been around Southeast Asia, Bali is perhaps one of the most queer-friendly. Second only to Bangkok. And that’s saying a lot.

If you want to experience Bali gay bars and hotels, going to Seminyak is your best bet. They have an entire street — JalanCamplungTanduk — that’s lined with gay bars. In fact, it has locally been dubbed DhyanaPura, which means “rainbow”.

Beside gays bars and hotels in Seminyak, Bali is also popular for its gay-friendly and gay-exclusive nudist resorts.

I’ve spent a LOT of time in Bali, checking out all the best Bali gay bars and hotels. If you wanna’ know how to queer up your time in the “island of the gods”, just read on!

Best Bali Gay Bar — MIXWELL

There are three Bali gay bars in the “gay street” of Seminyak — MIXWELL, Bali Joe, and Bottoms Up.

My favorite gay bar in Bali is MIXWELL. Their prime attraction is a stellar lineup of drag performances, usually spaced out by 5-10 minutes in between each performance.

One of the things that fascinated me most about their performances was the diversity. Besides usual queer anthems from the likes of Gloria Gaynor, Nikki Minaj, and Ariana Grande, they also did alternative numbers.

They once had a drag queen performing Evanescence’ “Bring Me Back To Life” dressed like Halle Berry as Storm from X-Men. That’s not it though. She legit stomped around the stage fisting the air like RuPaul alum Pearl Liaison!

Once every night, they also have a bunch of GoGo dancers come up and dance on the bar countertop. They’re usually well-oiled well-shredded beefy men who try their best to seduce the crowd. Their go-to move usually consists rubbing their hands up and down their bodies. Sometimes, they invite an enthusiastic girl on stage for a much prolonged dry humping session. I guess that’s entertaining for some folks, so, fair enough!

MIXWELL also had plenty of space to dance around without fear of knocking someone else over. And they also had a lounge section for some sweet cuddles.

Other Bali Gay Bars

Bali Joe

Bali Joe is right next to MIXWELL, and it’s one of the next best gay bars in Bali. It’s basically like MIXWELL in every way, just smaller. They have a stage at the end of the bar and one in the center. The drag performances are also spaced out similarly to MIXWELL. And they have an equally lackluster segment for GoGo dancers.

I didn’t care for it as much as MIXWELL. Even though it attracted fewer people than MIXWELL, it was always a lot more crowded. But then some did prefer it so… I guess you’re just gonna have to go bar hopping and find out!

Bottoms Up

Bottoms up is the loneliest gay bar I’ve ever seen.

I seriously have no idea how they’re still functioning. The only time I actually saw people in it was during New Year’s Eve. And that’s because the other bars were so full, people were spilling out onto the streets.

Yet the staff is ALWAYS enthusiastic about attracting — and sometimes coercing — passersby into coming in. I did go there once with a friend of mine, and I’ve gotta say it was a whole lotta’ fun. We had the whole bar to ourselves so we danced on table tops and lost our inhibitions.

But then the bar staff started interrogating us about whether we were fucking, our preferred sexual positions, and the length of our dicks. And that was that.

Best Bali Gay Hotel — Spartacvs

Spartacvs is one of the most popular gay hotels in Bali.

If you want to have a queer ol’ time in Bali, this is your best bet as it’s located in Seminyak. As such, a short drive or walk can bring you to all the Bali gay bars and hotels.

It’s an exclusively-gay clothing-optional resort in Bali. So you can expect to see a lot of naked bodies lying by the pool. If you enjoy shedding your layers, you’ll love this. If you don’t like seeing strangers naked, best move on.

Depending on your room, Spartacvs can cost approximately Rp 10.00.000 per day ($75 | ₹5000). You can check out the current rates at the Spartacvs Booking page.
